Bills froze up at the trade deadline, and the reason is painfully obvious

Buffalo Bills fans are likely disappointed at their team's lack of movement at the trade deadline. Perhaps the win over the Chiefs prompted the team to stay put but to say that fans were expecting more would be an understatement for sure.

The Bills could have desperately used help on offense, especially at wide receiver. Despite rumors circulating that they were in the mix for Deebo Samuel, and Rashid Shaheed also being someone that was dealt and therefore available, the Bills ultimately opted not to give Josh Allen another weapon.

Maybe there's another reason why the Bills were scared to pull the trigger and go for it here. Could it be that last year's addition of Amari Cooper before the trade deadline and his lackluster performance after joining the team impacted Brandon Beane's thought process?

Did the Amari Cooper trade leave Bills wary of swinging for the fences?

That's probably a wild thought but is it really that wild? Think about it - Cooper was supposed to come in and help the Bills offense thrive and be the piece that helped get them over the hump and to a Super Bowl. He failed to do his part and by season's end, Bills fans were happy to be rid of him.

Could Beane and the front office have been thinking about how this year's team is doing good enough on its own without a star player so why take that swing and risk whiffing? We'll probably never know if the Cooper deal had anything to do with this or not but it's a fair question.

Ultimately though, it's hard not to be disappointed with the Bills' lack of moves before the deadline. The Seahawks got Shaheed and now they'll have the speed the Bills crave for their offense. Chris Olave stayed in New Orleans but maybe he could have been acquired with more assertiveness. Samuel was apparently a possibility for the Bills to land so why didn't he end up in Buffalo?

The Cooper trade definitely didn't go well but not all trades will go as poorly as that one. It's too bad the Bills didn't add help to prove to themselves that not all trades are the same and Allen would hopefully get more from this addition than he did from that one.

Oh well. Here's to hoping the Bills' current playmakers can hold down the fort for the rest of the year.
