Bills' CB depth issue can be solved with reunion with familiar fan-favorite

The Bills could add more depth and veteran locker room presence by re-signing a fan favorite before training camp starts.

The Buffalo Bills boast quality young talent at their revamped cornerback position under general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Joe Brady. While the cast of characters looks solid on paper, one team can never have enough cornerback depth, especially in a passing league like the NFL.

Currently, the room consists of returning players Christian Benford and Maxwell Hairston, as well as free-agent acquisition Dee Alford, who replaces Taron Johnson as their nickel defensive back. Rounding out the lineup are second-round pick Davison Igbinosun and seventh-round pick Toriano Pride, Jr.

The current room is young and skilled, but it could use another player by bringing back a fan-favorite, talented veteran.

Tre'Davious White can help solve cornerback issues

Not only should the Bills be encouraged to re-sign Tre'Davious White, but they should also be happy that he is still available to demonstrate how his appearance will uplift the team's strengths. The 31-year-old is still in his prime after coming off a resurging 2025 season in which he made 40 tackles and started in 16 games out of a possible 17-game regular season.

One could argue that his skill set and strength in man coverage would fit better in Jim Leonhard's 3-4 aggressive multiple defense, where there will be more blitzing and man coverage, as opposed to the defenses run by Sean McDermott in the past.

In this defense, White would be in a better position to force interceptions and shut down some of the better wide receivers the Bills' defense will face on their 2026 schedule.

Also, they would most likely bring him back on a team-friendly deal, knowing that he would be another veteran locker room presence on a team he already knows and loves to be a part of.
Plus, the skilled corner would be returning to a similar 3-4 defense that both the LA Rams and the Baltimore Ravens ran, despite White being injured during both stints with the popular NFL franchises.

Don't let history repeat itself

With the NFL prioritizing high-scoring games and high injury rates, the Bills need to be one of those postseason teams with almost a full active roster, playing man coverage, and sacking the quarterback at key times to make a deep run to the Super Bowl.

Against the Denver Broncos last season, the Bills were without Hairston, which drove them to play Dane Jackson, who gave up a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the overtime loss. The season prior, Christian Benford suffered a game-ending concussion, forcing Kaiir Elam to be outplayed by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the 2024 AFC Championship game.

The Bills were defeated by the Chiefs, 32-29.

What White has to offer

Also, White would be reunited with Joe Brady, who would be his head coach, as he would remind him of former LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron.

Both Brady and Orgeron coached together at LSU when they won the 2020 BCS National Championship Game over Clemson, but neither was there when White played at LSU.

By also bringing back a former LSU alum, he would add locker-room presence and veteran leadership on the field.

If Benford, Hairston, or Igbinosun are out due to potential injuries, White would also bring positive play and motivation until the other players are ready to return.
