The tough part of the NFL Draft should be over for Bills fans, as they watched Brandon Beane trade back twice in the first round and then eventually made a third trade to get out of the first round. Not picking a player in the first round is not a great feeling, but the Bills took the right path to attack this draft.

While the Bills could have easily picked someone at No. 26…or No. 28…No. 31, they decided to focus on getting extra draft picks and that’s what they did. They now have a draft pick in every round moving forward and will have the opportunity to add to this roster.

When the Los Angeles Rams had selected quarterback Ty Simpson 13th overall in a bit of a stunning move, there was a lot of belief that maybe Buffalo was going to lose out on trading back from No. 26. Clearly, that was not a problem.

Now, the Bills will start their draft at the 35th pick and with them picking third in the second round, they have the chance to draft one of three defensive players that would be excellent fits for different reasons.

3 players Bills must look at closely to boost defense at No. 35

DT Kayden McDonald

Buffalo was bad against the run last year, and now that Kayden McDonald fell out of the first round, the Bills could easily get the best run-stopping defensive tackle in this draft. Even though Deone Walker has the ability to play the 1-tech spot in Jim Leonhard’s defense, putting McDonald in there not only gives Buffalo depth, but Buffalo then gets a true run-stuffer who can force double blocks.

LB Jacob Rodriguez

If the Bills want to find their next Matt Milano of their defense, Jacob Rodriguez should be the pick. He flies around on the field and attacks the ball very well. With his wild production the last two seasons as Texas Tech, I was very shocked that he was not a first round selection. Buffalo will now have the chance to make other teams who passed on him pay the price for years to come.

LB CJ Allen

While Rodriguez might be the best off-ball linebacker in this draft, you can never go wrong with drafting a defensive player from the SEC. Linebacker CJ Allen might be the most pro-ready linebacker in this draft and his leadership skills are on another level. While his game is not always dynamic, you know what you get with him which is constant consistency.
