Top 2023 tight end prospects for the Buffalo Bills: Sam LaPorta, Iowa

Sam LaPorta is a name many Bills fans have brought up as a third-round pick.  He is 6’3″ and weighs 245 pounds, with a 40-time of 4.59.  He tested very well at the combine and Next Gen Stats gave him an 86 athleticism score, third best among the tight ends at the combine.

He played in 43 games for the Iowa Hawkeyes, nearly 2,000 snaps.  During his career he totaled 1,721 yards on 158 receptions, with only five touchdowns.  Most of his work came in the final two seasons at Iowa, where he tallied 106 of those receptions and over 1,200 yards.

LaPorta to me projects a little bit of a project tight end, similar to Luke Musgrave.  If the Bills want to go tight end early in the draft, it’s has to be for a player that can provide Josh Allen a weapon the team can take advantage in 2023, not a possible tight end that might play more in 2024.

Not to mention the hefty contract they gave Dawson Knox, I don’t see them drafting a tight end right now to groom for the position.  One of the top three guys would be the only ones that make sense, given the immediate impact they could provide.
