The Buffalo Bills are preparing for the Los Angeles Rams this week, their first game of the 2022 season. On Sunday, the team announced their captains for the year with nine players. The number of captains has increased every year from only six in the years 2017 to 2019, then seven in 2020, and eight last year.
These are the captains for each side of the ball.
Buffalo Bills Offense: Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, Mitch Morse
On the offensive side of the ball, the Buffalo Bills have three players with quarterback Josh Allen being named captain for the fourth straight year and wide receiver Stefon Diggs for the second straight year. These two players are joined by center Mitch Morse, who was named captain for the first time with the Buffalo Bills.
The Bills’ offense has one more player named captain than the previous year.
Buffalo Bills Defense: Von Miller, Tremaine Edmunds, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde
The defensive side of the ball also has one more player named captain as well with Von Miller being named captain in his first year with the Buffalo Bills. The fact that Miller was named a captain in his first year is not very surprising as his leadership was one of the reasons the Buffalo Bills were interested in signing him as a free agent.
He is a two-time Super Bowl champion and that experience is something general manager Brandon Beane talked about earlier this year that will hopefully help Buffalo reach that point. Miller has also been seen coaching up some of the younger defensive ends, like Greg Rousseau, during practice, like in this video tweeted by Jon Scott.
He joins safety Micah Hyde, safety Jordan Poyer, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds who were all captains last year.
Buffalo Bills Special Teams: Taiwan Jones, Tyler Matakevich
However, special teams surprisingly went down by one player as long snapper Reid Ferguson will not be captain this year. This will be the first time Ferguson in four years that he will not be a captain for the Buffalo Bills.
Meanwhile, running back Taiwan Jones and linebacker Tyler Matakevich are captains for the second consecutive year.
