Matt Barkley

Matt Barkley previously was the backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills from 2018 to 2020 before the team elected to add Mitchell Trubisky to be Josh Allen’s backup last offseason. This offseason, Trubisky went to the Steelers, and the Bills traded for Case Keenum to be the backup.

However, they also lost Davis Webb, who had been on the practice squad and was almost like an extra coach for Josh Allen. Webb left in the offseason as well and signed with the New York Giants and the Bills brought back Barkley to essentially fill the role left vacant by Webb’s departure.

While Matt Barkley has looked like the better quarterback this preseason in comparison to Case Keenum, Barkley has primarily been playing against second and third teams. It shouldn’t be enough to change the Bills’ plans which have always been Keenum as the backup and Barkley as the quarterback on the practice squad.
