53-man roster projections for the Buffalo Bills after the preseason
Tight Ends (2)
Dawson Knox, Tommy Sweeney
The tight end position is one that the Buffalo Bills hoped would improve with the addition of O.J. Howard this offseason. However, Howard hasn’t shown much this summer and outside of one touchdown catch against the Broncos, he hasn’t made many impact plays.
The challenge is that Howard would create significant dead cap, over $2.6 million if they were to release him. However, if the Bills could find a trade partner that drops to $675,000 this year and $625,000 next year.
If the Bills can’t find a trade partner then it would be O.J. Howard in that second spot but if they do, and I believe they will, then Tommy Sweeney should return as the backup tight end. He hasn’t done much in the preseason games, outside of a 25-yard reception against the Panthers, but has had some good practices during training camp and that may be enough to get that spot.
