Stock Down: O.J. Howard

When the Buffalo Bills signed tight end O.J. Howard as a free agent it seemed to signal the potential for more versatility with the offense. By adding Howard, alongside Dawson Knox, could give the Buffalo Bills the opportunity for two-tight end sets, which is something they didn’t do much with Tommy Sweeney as the primary backup.

After practice on Saturday, Ryan Talbot with newyorkupstate.com wrote this about O.J. Howard:

"It’s too early to call this a competition, but O.J. Howard continues to struggle at Bills training camp. Howard mistimed his jump on one play and has failed to make any significant plays when his number has been called."

O.J. Howard is a former first round pick who had a promising start to his career with the Tampa Bay Bucs. However, he has had some injuries along the way which included a ruptured Achilles in 2020.

The injuries could be factoring into his struggles or it could be Howard trying to get on the same page with Josh Allen or understanding the offense. Even with all the struggles, it would seem unlikely that the Buffalo Bills would cut Howard but rather his role, and the expectations he has this year could be limited.
