Roughly one year ago, the Buffalo Bills were announcing that they had agreed to a six-year contract extension with their franchise quarterback Josh Allen. The six-year deal, which has an average salary of just over $43 million and $150 guaranteed, was one of the biggest contracts ever in the NFL.

Fast forward to this offseason and Josh Allen has almost fallen outside of the Top 5 in average salary among quarterbacks as he ranks fifth. The deal is already looking more and more like a bargain for the Buffalo Bills before the quarterback has even begun playing the years in that extension as he is playing this season in the final year of his rookie contract.

The reported contract extension for Kyler Murray is the latest example that shows Josh Allen’s extension is a bargain

The latest quarterback to agree to a new deal is Kyler Murray, who signed a five-year extension worth $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The annual average salary of $46.1 million is the second highest average among quarterbacks and is roughly $4 million behind Aaron Rodgers and $100,000 ahead of DeShaun Watson, according to Spotrac.

Both Rodgers and Watson signed new contracts this offseason with Rodgers agreeing to a three-year deal worth more than $150 million and Watson signed a five-year contract worth $230 million. The difference with both of these contracts, compared to Murray or Allen’s, is that their contracts are fully guaranteed.

The astonishing fact is that with quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, or even Russell Wilson next year, there is a real possibility that Josh Allen won’t even be in the Top 5 among quarterbacks this time next year.

When considering there is a case to be made that Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the NFL, or at the very least Top 3, this is a bargain for the Buffalo Bills. This was once again a great move by general manager Brandon Beane and with Allen’s contract less than some of the other top quarterbacks in the league, it gives the Bills some more flexibility to improve the overall roster and remain near the top of the league.
