6 role players on the Buffalo Bills fighting for a contract extension in 2022

Tommy Sweeney

Another role player fighting for a contract extension this season is tight end Tommy Sweeney. The former Boston College tight end was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the same year the Bills drafted Dawson Knox.

As a rookie, Sweeney would appear in six games with one start due in large part to the Bills dealing with a number of injuries at the position during training camp. He would finish the year with eight receptions, and 114 receiving yards.

After missing the entire 2020 season due to a foot injury early in the year and then developing myocarditis from COVID-19, Sweeney returned to the field last year. He appeared in 13 games, with three starts, and finished the year with nine receptions, 44 yards, and one touchdown.

This past season, Sweeney replaced veteran Lee Smith as primarily being a blocking tight end in this offense. He should have a chance to prove he can continue in that role in the final year of his rookie contract but may have to compete for a roster spot with O.J. Howard, who was signed as a free agent this offseason.
