Jaquan Johnson was also drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 2019 NFL Draft and one round before they selected Tommy Sweeney. During his time in the NFL, he hasn’t had a chance to play much on defense as the backup safety due to Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde missing almost no time over the past three years.

This past season he did get a chance to start in place of Poyer who missed Week 4 against the Houston Texans due to an ankle injury. In that game, Johnson would have three total tackles and his first career interception.

While Johnson hasn’t had a chance to play much on defense, he still has been able to help the Buffalo Bills on special teams with over 700 special teams snaps over the past three years.

After this season, there are some questions at safety as Jordan Poyer is entering the final year of his contract. If the Buffalo Bills don’t re-sign Poyer then Jaquan Johnson could make sense as a replacement.

However, if the Bills do bring back Poyer Jaquan Johnson could justify a contract extension by continuing to be a key part of the special teams unit.
