Jessie Bates III

Jessie Bates III is similar to Derwin James and Minkah Fitzpatrick that he could receive a contract that resets the market at safety. However, the difference with the negotiations between the Bengals and Bates is that they have a deadline.

The Bengals used the franchise tag on Jessie Bates III this offseason and if they hope to work out a contract extension they will have to do it before July 15th. If they are not able to agree to a new deal by that date, they will not be able to negotiate until after the 2022 season.

Bates has been a big part of the Bengals’ defense since entering the league, missing only two games over four seasons, and in his career has 408 total tackles, 10 interceptions, and 35 passes defended.

The Bengals may be more motivated to get a deal done by that deadline since Bates reportedly has no intention of signing the one-year contract that comes with the franchise tag. This is not something either side would likely want to linger into training camp.
