Another former first round pick that could be in line for a new deal this summer is Los Angeles’ Chargers safety Derwin James. According To Tyler Dragon of USA Today, the Chargers and James are ‘cautiously optimistic‘ about getting a new deal done.

When Derwin James is on the field, he is one of the best at his position with two Pro Bowl nominations, one All-Pro selection, 256 total tackles, five interceptions, 19 passes defended, and 5.5 sacks.

However, the challenge for James is that he has had injury issues early in his career. He played only five games in 2019 due to a foot injury and then missed the entire 2020 season due to a knee injury. This has not been an issue for Poyer who has been incredibly durable during his time with Buffalo as he has missed only two games over five seasons.

Similar to Fitzpatrick, Jordan Poyer would be unlikely to get a contract for the same number of years but the average salary could be a negotiating point for Poyer.
