Updated Buffalo Bills Depth Chart: Where does Khalil Shakir fit?

With the first pick on Day 3, the Buffalo Bills selected wide receiver Khalil Shakir out of Boise State after the team traded up in the fifth round to make the selection. He was a very productive wide receiver over his final three seasons at Boise State with at least 715 receiving yards, 50 receptions, and six touchdowns each year.

Shakir now joins a Buffalo Bills team that has a very good wide receiver group but he has a skill set that could put him in a position to see some time as a rookie. Let’s take a closer look at what the depth chart might look like with the new addition.

Starters: Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Jamison Crowder (slot)

Bench: Isaiah McKenzie, Khalil Shakir, Jake Kumerow, Marquez Stevenson, Isaiah Hodgins, Tanner Gentry

The expected starters for the Buffalo Bills shouldn’t change after the selection of Khalil Shakir with Stefon Diggs as the number one wide receiver and Gabriel Davis as the other outside wide receiver and in line for a breakout season.

The biggest change will be in the slot and Jamison Crowder, who the Bills signed as a free agent, should be the favorite to replace Cole Beasley this coming season. Crowder may not have the role exclusively and it wouldn’t be surprising if the work was split between him and Isaiah McKenzie.

After those top four wide receivers, it is really an open competition between the remaining wide receivers and Khalil Shakir could be the player that steps in as the next wide receiver.

He has the ability to play both inside and outside but more importantly, he is probably the team’s best deep threat on the roster with his speed. In addition to that, he also carried the ball enough in college that is worth noting with 71 rushing attempts over four seasons. He may end up replacing McKenzie as the gadget player in this offense.

Shakir is a player that has a unique skill set and if he wins that final roster spot, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a couple of touches a game in a number of different ways.
