Buffalo Bills 2022 NFL Draft Prospect to Know: Isaiah Spiller

At one time, Isaiah Spiller was in the discussion for being the top running back in this year’s NFL Draft. However, he hasn’t performed as well during the draft process, and if he slips it could end up being great value for the Buffalo Bills at a potential need they have on their roster.

The Buffalo Bills don’t appear too concerned about the workouts so far and reportedly will have Spiller come to Western New York as one of their Top 30 visits before the NFL Draft. Let’s take a look at the player and how he might fit on the Buffalo Bills’ offense.

Measurables/Stats

Height: 6’0″

Weight: 217 pounds

Arms: 31 3/4″

Hands: 8 5/8″

Isaiah Spiller has had no shortage of work during his three years at Texas A&M with over 170 rushing attempts each season and 541 rushing attempts in total. He has remained relatively consistent during that time averaging between 5.4 and 5.6 yards per rushing attempt and had 2,993 rushing yards.

The only area he regressed was in terms of rushing touchdowns and after 10 in his first year, he would find the end zone only 15 times the final two seasons.

"Volume-carry running back with good size and talent for starting consideration as a pro. He was slowed, at times, by inconsistent run blocking but was still productive and consistent for much of the 2021 season. He has interior vision and loose hips, allowing him to locate and get to run lanes regardless of traffic. Spiller runs with good elusiveness but stays in that mode a little too long, which can affect his ability to finish with authority. He’s a solid back but not overly dynamic and lacks the desired third-down value right now."

How Isaiah Spiller fits with the Buffalo Bills

If the Buffalo Bills were to draft Isaiah Spiller, he likely would be competing with Devin Singletary as the lead running back in this offense. He is bigger than Singletary which could help him in terms of the rushing volume but the question will be after the way Singletary finished the year, would the Buffalo Bills have significantly improved the position?

That is tough to tell and certainly the way Spiller has tested this offseason will give some teams pause when considering using a Day 2 pick on the former Texas A&M running back. He didn’t seem overly concerned about it and believes he is better in the game. He looks to be more elusive in games when running than having that breakaway straight-line speed.

When considering the fact that the Buffalo Bills don’t have many glaring weaknesses they can look for value with a lot of their picks. If Isaiah Spiller does slip, he could be a great value in Round 3, and having depth at the running back position wouldn’t hurt but his fit in this offense, especially this year, isn’t exactly clear.
