Buffalo Bills: 4 Takeaways from the initial 53-man roster
By Aaron Tully
The Buffalo Bills like Tommy Sweeney
The roster that the Buffalo Bills submitted at the 4 PM deadline has just two tight ends on it: Dawson Knox, and Tommy Sweeney. The Bills released free agent signing Jacob Hollister in the morning, and Nate Becker in the afternoon announcement.
While several things could happen for the Bills at the tight end position (such as a trade or the re-signing of Jacob Hollister after some injured reserve moves.), it is significant that Sweeney was the only other registered tight end that the Bills kept on the roster. It speaks to what the coaching staff sees in the third-year tight end out of Boston College.
Sweeney missed all of last season with complications from Covid-19. In 2019, his rookie campaign, he caught eight passes for 114 yards.
The coaching staff must really see something in Tommy Sweeney if he was chosen over Jacob Hollister to back up Dawson Knox. Considering that Hollister has much more experience and game time than Sweeney does, that is significant.
Tommy Sweeney will share the tight end room with Dawson Knox and hybrid fullback/tight end Reggie Gilliam this season. Perhaps 2021 will be the year that Bills Mafia will see what the coaching staff sees in Sweeney.
