Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard (25) celebrates his second interception in 14 seconds in the second quarter of the game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018.Indianapolis Colts Versus Miami Dolphins At Lucas Oil Stadium In Indianapolis Sunday Nov 25 2018 /

Defensive backs

CB Xavien Howard, Miami Dolphins

The NFL’s reigning interceptions king, Xavien Howard picked off 10 passes last season after only corralling 12 through his first four years in the league. Howard also led the league with 20 passes defended, making him the toughest player in the league to pass on for opposing gunslingers.

Now happy after getting his contract restructured, the corner is poised to cause nothing but trouble for the other three AFC East squads.

CB Tre’Davious White, Buffalo Bills

There are so many elite options at CB in the AFC East, but Tre White has and will continue to firmly entrench himself as arguably the best in the division. In addition to his three interceptions and 11 passes defended in 2020, White also made some key plays while rushing the passer. He racked up 1.5 sacks and three QB hits, both career-bests for the 26-year-old.

Although the Buffalo Bills may not have as much corner depth as the Dolphins and Patriots, White is as good of a number one option at the position as there is in the NFL.

S Marcus Maye, New York Jets

The lone bright spot in a Jets secondary that was absolutely horrid in 2020, Marcus Maye has established himself as a premier safety in the NFL. His 88 tackles finished second on New York and his 11 passes defended were tied for third amongst all players at his position.

Maye also set career-best marks with four tackles for a loss and two sacks, providing some backfield disruption that was lost when the team traded Jamal Adams last offseason.

S Jordan Poyer, Buffalo Bills

Entering his age-30 season, Jordan Poyer continues to be a key contributor for the Buffalo Bills. The 124 combined hits and four quarterback hits he supplied last year were the most he’s recorded in a single season.

Playing alongside teammate Micah Hyde, the two combine to form the best safety duo of any team in the division. Poyer is reliable in all phases, making him one of the leaders of the Bills’ defense.
