Buffalo Bills: 53-man roster projection entering training camp
By Aaron Tully
Safety (3):
Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Jaquan Johnson
The Buffalo Bills have boasted one of the NFL’s best safety duos since Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer came to town in 2017.
The two starting safety spots are locks; the backup safety spots are anything but that. Siran Neal essentially fills two spots on the depth chart; backup cornerback, and backup safety. With that being established, there is only one backup safety spot left.
Despite drafting Damar Hamlin in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft, the Bills would probably go with Jaquan Johnson over Hamlin.
Johnson has played just under 50 percent of Buffalo’s special teams snaps in his first two seasons in the NFL, so his special teams’ contributions are likely to be taken into account.
Damar Hamlin, Josh Thomas, and Tariq Thompson will all compete for spots on the practice squad, but Hamlin has the clear edge over the latter two.
