The greatest Buffalo Bills player to wear #42:

One of the more decorated DB’s in Buffalo Bills history is Butch Byrd. A fourth-round choice out of Boston University in the 1964 AFL draft. Byrd flew for 40 interceptions in 90 games for the Bills ( with a creepy 666 return yards). Byrd also had a 74-yard punt return touchdown in the 1965 AFL Championship (pictured above). That’s still the longest postseason punt return the Bills have ever had.

Byrd also had many accolades to his career, and they are:

  • 3-time All-Pro selection
  • 5-time Pro Bowl selection
  • Member of both the Bills AFL championship teams in 1964 and 1965
  • His first interception was a 72-yard pick-six
  • All-time leader in interceptions for the Buffalo Bills (40)
  • Played in 101 consecutive games
  • Member of All-TIme Buffalo Bills Silver anniversary team
  • Over 1200 yards as a kick/punt returner

To put this into a modern-day perspective, Tre’Davious White has 15 career interceptions. Byrd had 40. Talk about a Bills ballhawk.
