Mitch Trubisky doesn’t bring comfort if Josh Allen is unavailable
Unless Brian Daboll uses his wizardry, having Mitch Trubisky carry the Buffalo Bills if Josh Allen can’t play is worrisome.
One of the more interesting moves of the free-agency period was the decision by Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane to ditch former backup Matt Barkley in favor of Mitch Trubisky. While Trubisky is mobile like Josh Allen, I can’t help but feel uneasy if Trubisky has to come in.
Of course, the team still has 2020 5th round draft pick Jake Fromm, but he has yet to see any regular-season snaps. There is also Davis Webb, a 2017 draft pick out of California by the New York Giants. He hasn’t seen action either.
My issue with Trubisky is that he doesn’t do well under pressure. While Trubisky has had seven game-winning drives, albeit in 51 career games. A 29-21 record with two playoff appearances is definitely some progress from early on in his career. Just because Trubisky made the playoffs last year doesn’t always mean that the team is good.
While he may provide an upgrade over Barkley, what’s yet to be seen is if Trubisky can be relied on in clutch moments. Because if Josh Allen has to miss a game for whatever reason, Trubisky is likely to get the start due to his NFL experience.
When comparing the career stats of these two together, of course Trubisky actually having a starting gig in the NFL will help his yards. While Trubisky’s never thrown for more than 3,300 yards, it’s not like he needs to be performing at that level to get the team to a victory.
If the running game can improve, the less worried I will be about him steering the offense. However, the running out of bounds on a 4th down in the playoff game last year against the New Orleans Saints still haunts my positive thought process. Free-agent quarterbacks such as Brett Hundley or even Robert Griffin III would be a better option than keeping Trubisky on the roster.
Maybe there will be progress if we see Trubisky on the field. Hopefully, we won’t have to after the preseason.
