Can any of the UDFA the Bills signed make the Roster?

Buffalo Bills UDFA #1: Olaijah Griffin (CB, USC) 5-11, 176 lbs.

Coming out of USC, Olaijah Griffin was not a highly touted draft prospect. However, if he were picked in rounds 5-7 it would not have been considered a reach by any means. After two productive seasons as a starter for USC in the Pac-12 and versatility to play a couple of positions on the defense, Griffin is a player who could have benefited from a normal pre-draft experience.

Griffin comes to a Buffalo Bills cornerback room that has not seen major improvements since last season adding only Rachad Wildgoose who was picked in the 6th round and losing veteran Josh Norman in free agency. Atop the depth chart sits Tre’Davious White, Levi Wallace, and slot corner Taron Johnson.

After those three players who are essentially roster “locks”, things get a little more cloudy. Last season Buffalo carried five cornerbacks which leaves two spots open for other players. The players that Griffin will compete with have experience in Buffalo’s defense. Last year 7th round pick Dane Jackson received high praise from General Manager Brandon Beane earlier in the offseason and Siran Neal is one of Buffalo’s top special team’s players.

Combine those two players, the addition of Wildgoose, and Cam Lewis who has been a mainstay on Buffalo’s practice squad; Griffin has his work cut out for him. Luckily for Griffin, none of these players have proven high-level play at cornerback at the NFL level leaving him a path to the 53-man roster. Griffin has a chance to make the roster and is arguably one of the most talented UDFA that Brandon Beane has brought in. Combine that with a young and unproven group at cornerback and Griffin has a chance to make the roster if he has an amazing training camp. However, even if Griffin performs at a high level it might be more likely that Buffalo will cut him and place him on the practice squad.

What gives Griffin a chance is his versatility at the position is If Griffin performs so well that Buffalo feels another team could pick him up he may make the roster over Neal or Wildgoose.

Prediction: Cut, Signed to Practice Squad
