The Buffalo Bills could use depth at the cornerback position and this is something that potentially Olaijah Griffin could address as early as this year. Let’s take a closer look at his profile and how he might fit on this defense.
Measurables/Stats
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 176 pounds
Olaijah Griffin played 22 games over three seasons for the University of Southern California. While he did play in five games in his first year at the school, it wasn’t until his second season in 2019 that he became a starter and played in 11 games. He finished the year with 37 total tackles and nine passes defended.
This past season, Griffin played in only six games due to the shortened year and had 22 total tackles, one interception, and three passes defended.
NFL.com Scouting Report by Lance Zierlein
"Long-limbed and thin-framed, Griffin has the coverage traits to create tighter throwing windows in a variety of schemes. His twitchy feet and well-timed leaps are two very good starting points for defending underneath or down the field. However, he needs to improve his route recognition and instincts in order to do more with his length and make more plays on the football. Griffin’s injury history and slender frame are sure to cause concerns for teams, too. Overall, his disappointing testing and lack of desired size will make sticking with a pro team challenging over the long haul."
How he fits with the Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have had success at cornerback with undrafted free agents over the year with the most notable being Levi Wallace. He joined the team in 2018 and ended up starting seven games as a rookie and became more of the starter the past two years with 28 games started over that stretch.
In addition, the Bills had Cam Lewis, who was an undrafted free agent signing in 2019, on the active roster last year after being on the practice squad in 2019. He started one game last year and looked like he was pushing Taron Johnson for the starting job before suffering an injury.
For Griffin, he is unlikely to start this year but could be in position to earn one of the final roster spots at the position. He will certainly need to have a strong training camp and preseason but if he plays well could be a backup as an outside corner this season for the Buffalo Bills.
