Round 5, 174th Overall: Shaka Toney, EDGE (Penn State)

With their second fifth round pick, the Buffalo Bills return to the defensive side of the ball and add another pass rusher on the defensive line. Shaka Toney is an interesting player as he didn’t get the noterity that his teammate Jayson Oweh gets but was productive in his own right.

In four seasons with Penn State, Toney had 20 sacks and 28.5 tackles for a loss, including five sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss in only eight games this past season.

The concern with Toney is that he projects as a “rotational designated pass rusher” according to his scouting report on The Draft Network. However, this may not be as much of a concern for the Buffalo Bills as they rotate their defensive ends frequently and this past season Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison both played under 60% of the snaps.

If the Bills were to add someone like Toney, who excels as a pass rusher, the team could maximize what he does well and he can contribute to this defense as a rookie.
