Opinion: Buffalo Bills should begin fielding trade offers for Devin Singletary

One of the focuses this offseason has been on the running back position for the Buffalo Bills. This past season Josh Allen had a breakout season and the passing game was one of the best in the league.

However, the run game left something to be desired, which was a disappointment, when considering the expectations they had entering the season. This past season Devin Singletary was entering his second year after a promising rookie season and was joined by third round draft pick Zack Moss.

The hope was that these two would combine for a formidable one-two punch at the position but it didn’t materialize and now the Bills could find themselves using one of their top picks again on a running back. If this happens, the Bills should have a plan in place to move Devin Singletary in a draft weekend trade for more picks.

Even if the Buffalo Bills don’t draft a running back, the idea to explore a trade for Devin Singletary still would make sense. While he didn’t have a great year, he is a young running back with two more years left on a rookie contract and would be an affordable option for a team.

Why would the Buffalo Bills consider trading Devin Singletary?

The answer to that questions is Zack Moss. While the run game struggled, Moss showed enough that he could be the featured back.

Last year’s third round pick is a bigger running back and can bring to this offense everything Singletary can and more. He in particular is a better back in short yardage and goal line situations. Towards the end of the regular season, Moss was actually starting to surpass Singletary in snaps and touches and when the Bills were trying to run down clock in the fourth quarter it was Moss who was getting the work.

The other reason is that the Buffalo Bills have depth that could be the complimentary piece to Moss in this backfield. They added Matt Breida in free agency, who is more of a home run threat and can provide more explosive plays than Singletary. The Buffalo Bills also have Antonio Williams,  who played well in two quarters of football to end the regular season. While the sample size is small, he showed enough to be a good third option on this depth chart.

Whether or not the Buffalo Bills draft a running back, they are going to find themselves in a tough situation leading into the 2021 NFL season and will have to cut a couple of good running backs. It would make sense to make that move now and try and trade Devin Singletary over the next few weeks.
