Buffalo Bills should not draft wide receiver prospect Mike Strachan

The Buffalo Bills continue to make smart moves in free agency, but they are still focused on the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. The Bills continue to do their homework on prospects as another one is added to the list that the team has met with. According to Justin Melo of the Draft Network, the Buffalo Bills have recently met with former University of Charleston wide receiver Mike Strachan.

After releasing John Brown earlier this offseason, there was a point that wide receiver was a priority need. However, once the Buffalo Bills signed Emmanuel Sanders the need for another wide receiver decreased significantly. Isaiah McKenzie is still unsigned and it is unclear if the Bills have plans to re-sign him or not. If McKenzie isn’t resigned, the only type of wide receiver the Bills should be looking at in the draft should be one that can play the gadget role in the offense and maybe kick/punt return too.

At 6’5″ and almost 230 pounds Mike Strachan is a big bodied wide receiver, but he can also move as he recorded a 4.46 second 40 yard dash. With good measurables and surprising athleticism to match that size, Strachan is an intriguing prospect.

With all that being said, the Buffalo Bills drafted two big bodied receivers in last year’s draft, Gabriel Davis and Isaiah Hodgins. Davis had an excellent rookie season considering the fact that he was initially the fourth wide receiver on the depth chart and did well when asked to step in for the injured John Brown. Hodgins on the other had a lingering preseason injury and the Bills placed him on season ending injured reserve. Hodgins has a chance to come back in 2021 and add some size to a relatively small wide receiver group.

Any wide receiver that the Buffalo Bills decide to draft will have a tough time making the roster without providing value as a kick and/or punt returner. Strachan is a great sleeper prospect in this draft, but it wouldn’t make sense for the Bills to waste a draft pick on someone like him that will have an uphill battle to make the roster. However, if Strachan goes undrafted he would be an interesting UDFA to sign and stash on the practice squad.
