The Buffalo Bills brought in Stefon Diggs last offseason and he completely transformed this offense, leading the league in receptions and receiving yards. The wide receiver position was a strength of this team last year but they could be making some serious changes over the next few months.
Let’s take a look at the wide receivers under contract and who is a free agent entering this offseason.
Wide Receivers Under Contract
Stefon Diggs
John Brown
Cole Beasley
Gabriel Davis
Isaiah Hodgins
Jake Kumerow – Reserve/Future Contract
Tanner Gentry – Reserve/Future Contract
Duke Williams – Reserve/Future Contract
The top of the depth chart remains under contract through next season with Diggs, Brown, Beasley and Davis. However, one player to watch in this group is John Brown who could find himself being cut this offseason as a way for the Buffalo Bills to create some additional cap space.
In addition to those players, the Bills will have Isaiah Hodgins back who was the sixth round pick by the team last year but spent the year on injured reserve. They also brought back Jake Kumerow, Tanner Gentry, and Duke Williams on Reserve/Future Contracts as all three spent time on the Bills practice squad this past season.
Free Agents
Andre Roberts
Isaiah McKenzie
The Buffalo Bills have two players who are unrestricted free agents this offseason. The first is Andre Roberts, and while he is listed as a wide receiver he has primarily been the Bills returner on special teams. He is 34 years of age and the Bills may want to add a younger player here but has made three straight Pro Bowls and doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
The other wide receiver is Isaiah McKenzie, who may not have seen as many snaps as some of the starters, but was very important to this offense. He was a gadget player that the Bills seemingly had two or three plays called for him each game in hopes of breaking a big play.
He also showed in Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins that he could be more than a gadget player with three total touchdowns (two receiving, one punt return). The question will be can they fit McKenzie under the salary cap as he is sure to generate interest in free agency.
