Round 7 – Pick 228 overall

Original Selection: Tommy Sweeney

Re-Draft Selection: Myles Gaskin

The final selection for the Bills in the 2019 NFL Draft was another tight end, Tommy Sweeney, in addition to selecting Knox with the 96th overall pick. With Lee Smith, Dawson Knox, and Tyler Kroft as the tight ends on the roster during the time of this selection, it makes sense to add some more youth to the position group.

In his two years with the Bills, Sweeney has only suited up for 6 games. This past season specifically, Sweeney missed the entire year because of a heart condition diagnosed during the preseason. The primary reason he ended up sitting out for the duration of the season was because of Covid concerns linked to his heart condition.

However, after taking Irv Smith in the second round of this hypothetical 2019 re-draft, the tight end room feels solidified enough to move on without Sweeney. Furthermore, because I passed on Devin Singletary in the 3rd round to take Terry McLaurin instead, the running back room could use some reinforcements.

When looking at the draft board of players remaining after pick 228 overall, there is one running back that had a breakout year this season who is still available. This is the current Dolphins running back Myles Gaskin who was selected with the 234th pick overall.

In just his 10 games played in 2020, Gaskin racked up 972 total offensive yards on 183 touches averaging 5.3 yards per touch and an additional 5 total touchdowns.

Without Singletary on the roster, it was essential to grab a youthful running back in this hypothetical re-draft to add to a room with seasoned vets like LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore. Not only did I add youth to the position group, but I also did it with value as Gaskins will have prime return on investment as a 7th round draft pick.
