There was hope that during the massive improvement saw in Josh Allen that some he would be able to elevate the play of those around in. For the most part, Allen did as his wide receivers had, collectively, a phenomenal year. Where Allen’s superstar play was unable to improve was the Bills’ tight ends.

During the 2019 season, Bills’ tight end Dawson Knox was poised to be a star in the making as he plowed through Cincinnati Bengal defenders. In the 2020 season, Knox failed to build on the momentum he gained and was the culprit of many dropped balls. Knox is not all to blame, though he is the team’s starter, as the position group as a whole was rather unimpressive.

This is worrisome for the Bills as the latest and greatest trend in the NFL of pass-catching tight ends has yet to take flight in Western New York.

While he is not the singular reason for their success, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was near impossible for Buffalo to cover. Recording a pair of touchdowns and 65 yards was a position that Buffalo could not cover, nor a performance they could replicate.

As a result of the position’s performance, Buffalo should address it in the upcoming draft. Players like Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth would be an excellent weapon for Josh Allen in 2021.
