Back to Fundamentals

One of the biggest issues for the Buffalo Bills, on both sides of the ball, has been penalties. According to The Football Database, the Bills rank second in penalties (68) and penalty yards (640).

There are two penalty categories, in particular, that stand out that should be easy to correct and that the Buffalo Bills are near the top of the league in. The first is offensive holding, which the Bills have 10 which is the fourth-highest total in the NFL. These types of penalties very easily can halt an offensive drive by setting them back 10 yards.

The other, and this isn’t so much about fundamentals but more about discipline and that is unnecessary roughness. The Buffalo Bills have been called for this penalty six times, which is tied for the most in the NFL.

The Buffalo Bills penalty issue was on full display against the Arizona Cardinals, and one drive specifically where they had four penalties that resulted in 35 penalty yards. This drive was after the defense forced an interception and the offense couldn’t do anything due to all the penalties.

The Buffalo Bills can’t beat themselves with these kinds of mistakes moving forward, and especially in the playoffs, where the margin of victory is usually very small.
