Balanced Offensive Attack

Although the Buffalo Bills put on a show last week on offense, the play calling was not very balanced at all. The Seahawks are just about the worst passing defense in the league this year and the Bills decided to attack it. However, Week 10 will be different against an Arizona Cardinals defense that is much more well-rounded and does not have a glaring weakness to exploit. Therefore, it would be most advantageous for the Bills to be neutral in their play calling to keep the Cardinals defense guessing and hopefully biting on play-action fakes.

The Cardinals defense is hovering around the middle of the pack in most defensive categories and with Budda Baker appearing to be healthy enough to play in Week 10, there isn’t an obvious spot to attack this Cardinals defense. The Cardinals are 19th in the league in total passing yards allowed and 22nd in total rushing yards allowed. Furthermore, they are also 23rd in yards per rush allowed at about 4.6 yards allowed per carry.

While these numbers may not be obvious reasons to attack the Cardinals run defense, the stats and trends certainly show that this part of their defense is a bit weaker than their pass coverage. For the Bills to have success in Week 10, expect them to balance out the play calling a bit more compared to last week when it was about a 70/30 split in favor of pass calls. A 60/40 split in favor of pass calls may be what is most effective in this specific matchup for the Buffalo Bills.

Following a week where Devin Singletary and Zack Moss combined for less than 20 touches, with the success of Josh Allen and the pass catchers it was understandable. In Week 10, at least 20 combined touches for Singletary and Moss should be the goal for this game in order to keep the Cardinals’ defense honest in the play-action game.
