Slow down Aaron Donald but don’t over-commit
First, foremost, and most obvious, the Bills offensive line will need to slow down Aaron Donald. To ask the Bills to stop Donald from getting a tackle for loss or a sack in this game is just too much to ask. Donald will be productive in his own way, by drawing consistent double teams from the Bills offensive line and opening up pass rush lanes for his teammates.
The caveat to slowing down Donald is the threat he poses by trying to stop him and over correcting. By doing this, the Bills open up the door to other threatening pass rushers like Michael Brockers and Rams newly acquired edge rusher Leonard Floyd.
The Rams defensive line has been lining up extremely wide thus far this season with both tackles in the 3 technique position primarily and the edge rushers lining up close to 9 technique, far outside the offensive tackles. By lining up this wide, it makes it difficult for any offensive line to commit to a consistent double team on Donald. The explanation for this difficulty is because it opens up massive blitzing gaps for the Rams linebackers or safeties.
With all that being said, fans should be more concerned with how Donald will disrupt the running game rather than how he will disrupt Josh Allen and the passing game. With how great Allen has been so far this season and his ability to improvise, fans should have confidence in him being able to escape the pocket and make a play. Considering the struggles the Bills running game has had so far this season, this is where Donald should be expected to impact the Buffalo offense most in Week 3.
