Buffalo Bills: 7 players team may cut to get roster down to 80 players

One of the few positions that appears to be solidified in terms of the depth chart is tight end. At the top of the depth chart is second-year player Dawson Knox, veteran Tyler Kroft and second-year player Tommy Sweeney.

The battle at this position is really only a battle if the Bills coaching staff elects to keep three tight ends. If it is three then Sweeney will be competing with Lee Smith but if the Buffalo Bills keep four then Sweeney and Smith both make it.

This is going to leave Jason Croom and Nate Becker likely on the outside looking in. The Bills could elect to cut both players but Croom has proven he can be productive at the NFL level with his finish in 2018. He is coming off a season that he spent on IR and the Bills will likely want to keep him close to the organization, likely on the practice squad.

As for Becker, he is a blocking tight end but doesn’t provide much else to the position. Since the team already has Lee Smith for that role, it would be hard to imagine he moves up the depth chart enough to have a shot at 53-man roster spot. This is why he would seem like a likely candidate to be cut before training camp.
