Key Offseason Offensive Additions: Re-signed: OL Joe Thuney, Signed: QB Brian Hoyer Draft: TE Devin Asiasi, TE Dalton Keene
It has been a crazy offseason for the Patriots. With Brady departing, the responsibility to run the Patriot offense falls on expected new starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham. The 4th round pick in 2019 out of Auburn should have a lot of confidence heading into the 2020 season because he was able to learn from the best while he could. Another reason he should feel confident is the fact that offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is still around. He has been a key piece in the success of the Patriots’ offense in recent years.
The supporting cast for the Patriots signal caller stays relatively the same. If they can stay healthy, they can make some noise and challenge for the division again. Their strength will lie on running backs Sony Michel and James White. Their skills make them difficult to defend.
A key item on their to do list was re-signing Joe Thuney in which they did by applying the franchise tag and he will be a key contributor on the offensive front. The question marks will be the health of the wide receivers and lack of quality at tight end. Julian Edelman is a work horse, but it remains to be seen how much his body take week after week. He played hurt last season and it showed.
Tight end Matt LaCosse is going to have to step up his game if he wants to make a name for himself. And new tight end draftees Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene will do what they can to stand out in training camp to make an impression on head coach Bill Belichick. All in all, this roster still looks good, but they have holes in key positions that keep them out of the top spot on this list of AFC East offenses.
