Buffalo Bills Offseason Preview: Running Backs

The Buffalo Bills will enter the offseason with three running backs under contract including Singletary, T.J. Yeldon and preseason favorite Christian Wade. The other running backs the Bills had this past season, Frank Gore and Senorise Perry, were on one-year contracts and could become free agents this offseason.

The front office has two big questions they must answer and those answers will dictate how they approach the next few months. The first is if they bring Frank Gore back but they may not even have a chance to make that decision. At 36 years of age, Gore will have just completed his 15th season in the NFL and it remains to be seen if this will be his final year. He certainly didn’t look like a player that joined the league in 2003 but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is ready for another year.

If Gore does decide to play again, he would be a great addition to this team even if he isn’t the same back he was a decade ago. The countless stories of how well liked and respected he is within the locker room speaks to the player he is and having Singletary learn another year from him wouldn’t be a bad thing.

The other question is whether or not they have a spot on the 53-man roster for Christian Wade. The former rugby player was part of the NFL’s program to attract international athletes to the NFL. Wade made a big impact, and the fan base quickly embraced his style of play as he showed an explosiveness that allowed him to make big plays during the preseason.

The Bills did end up cutting Wade at the start of the year but he has been apart of the practice squad for the entire season. While the organization likely has an opinion on him, most outsiders don’t know how he has developed over that time. If he is to the point that he can contribute, this will make the job of the front office much easier and the need for a running back less pressing.

However, if he is not there yet the team could add a player in free agency or the NFL Draft and they will have plenty of options in both.
