With week one finally underway, let’s take a glance at what is going on in the AFC East. What happened on Sunday, stats and how the standings currently look.

The Buffalo Bills kicked off the 2017/18 season in the right direction on Sunday. The Bills secured a commanding 21-12 win against the New York Jets on Sunday at New Era Field. It was all Buffalo in this one as the Bills dominated from start to finish. The story of the game was Buffalo’s defense, holding New York to just 38 total rushing yards on 15 attempts, compared to Buffalo’s 190 yards on 42 attempts.

Buffalo’s defense managed to get enough pressure on New York’s quarterback Josh McCown all afternoon as the Bills were able to force two turnovers. The Jets were left chasing Buffalo all game as Buffalo racked up a total of 33:04 time of possession compared to New York’s 26:56. Yes, it was the New York Jets, and the Bills did indeed get the much important first win. But, there is still need for improvement.

In the end, Tyrod Taylor’s two touchdowns seemed to be enough for the win. But, it was a full “team win” as head coach Sean McDermott said following the win. Great running by running back LeSean McCoy and fullback Mike Tolbert helped the Bills rack up a combined 152 yards and one touchdown.

The defense came up big with newcomers like Ramon Humber who lead the team in tackles (13), and safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde each getting an interception. The Bills now find themselves alone at the top of the standings in the AFC East thanks to the Chiefs spoiling the Patriots’ Super Bowl LI banner party.

Buffalo now shifts their focus towards week two, where head coach Sean McDermott makes his much-anticipated return to Carolina when the Bills face off against Cam Newton and the Panthers.

Due to Hurricane Irma, Sunday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was canceled. So there was only one AFC East match up being played on Sunday. But, to get the 2017/18 NFL season kicked off was another AFC East team on Thursday night. The New England Patriots played host to the Kansas City Chiefs, as the defending champions unveiled their Super Bowl LI banner.
