Buffalo Bills Have High Chances of Retaining Mike Gillislee

B.W. Webb made a free agent visit at One Bills Drive on Monday. Could he help add depth to a depleted cornerback group?

As of right now, the Buffalo Bills have just five cornerbacks on their roster and only one of those players was a starter last season. With Stephon Gilmore and Nickell Robey-Coleman departing the team this offseason, Buffalo is left with Ronald Darby, Kevon Seymour, Marcus Roberson, Charles Gaines and Leonard Johnson — who most recently signed with the team.

After adding two safeties that could possibly both be the starters next season, it’s time to address the cornerbacks. Most of it will be handled come draft day, I would be surprised if they don’t use a high draft pick on a cornerback. Even then, depth will still be an issue and adding competition is always a good thing.

B.W. Webb would be perfect competition and has proven to be a remarkable depth player. I don’t know if he would be able to start, most of that would depend on his offseason with the team, but he would definitely be a good replacement for Robey-Coleman. He was originally known as a slot corner, but has shown ability to play on the outside — hence the opportunity for a bigger role.

In addition, he has something in common with Sean McDermott — who has made it known that familiarity will be key under his watch. Both played their college football days at William & Mary.

A fourth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, Webb brings a lot of athleticism and even more potential under the right coaching staff. His combine numbers in 2013 were admirable to say the least — 4.51 40-yard dash, 6.82 three-cone, 3.84 shuttle, 40.5″ vertical, 11′ broad jump.

Since being drafted, he has spent time with four teams — Dallas, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and New Orleans. Over those four years, he has played in a total of 49 games and has combined for 68 tackles, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed and one stuff. He has recorded one interception in each of the past two seasons — with Tennessee in 2015 and New Orleans in 2016.

Webb would be a great addition to this cornerback group if it were to come at the right price. He is also scheduled to meet with the Browns and Bears, but it is unknown what his asking price is expected to be.

At least we know the Buffalo Bills are concerned about their cornerback depth and are actively searching for an answer. Hopefully, B.W. Webb is that answer.
