Heading into a contract year, Robert Woods is hoping for his best season yet

Wide receiver Robert Woods is entering a make or break year, he is also entering a contract year. Coming into this season Woods is fully healthy. He spent most of last year injured with a torn groin, yet still played 14 games. The injury robbed him of his ability to cut and jump.  After offseason surgery and spending time in rehab, Woods feels he is back to 100%.

So far this offseason and in training camp, Woods has been explosive and is looking for a breakout year. When the Bills drafted Woods out of USC in 2013, they were expecting to have a star at WR. He showed promise in his first season.

At the time veteran receiver Stevie Johnson was still on the team. Despite a quarterback carousel, Johnson was the team’s best receiver and put up solid numbers. After that, the team traded up in the first round to grab Sammy Watkins and Woods seemed to take a backseat to him.

Then came the coaching change with Rex Ryan and his run first offense. The Bills did not have a proven quarterback on the team and went with young Tyrod Taylor. Along with that, the Bills brought in Percy Harvin and tight end Charles Clay. That took away plenty of touches from Woods. Yet he still managed to get over 500 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

Earlier this year GM Doug Whaley was reportedly not happy with Woods and his numbers so far. Woods has worked to get healthy and get back to the player he knows he can be. He’s been building chemistry with Tyrod Taylor throughout minicamp and through the preseason so far.

While Watkins is still the number one receiver, he has suffered many injuries since entering the league and has missed several games. If he is out of the lineup, Woods becomes the number one target on the team. This will provide Woods with an opportunity to put up his best numbers yet. With this being a contract year, Woods needs a big year to factor into the Bills long-term plans.
