One of the most notable trends in the NFL this offseason was the building consensus that Josh Allen is the best quarterback currently in the league. It’s not hard to see why as the Bills have won double-digit games in each of the previous seven seasons and a big reason why is due to the play of Allen.
But one area where Allen doesn’t get enough credit is his ability to dominate at the end of games. Yes, the overtime game against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round will always be used against him, but that doesn’t take away from all of the other times he’s made the winning play for the Bills over the years.
Allen is one of the NFL’s most proven clutch QBs
In a recent article by Mark Chichester of Pro Football Focus, he wrote about the most clutch quarterbacks in the NFL during the 2025 season. Of course, Allen appeared on the list, coming in with a passing grade of 81.2 in clutch situations. Here is a snippet from PFF and Chichester regarding the Bills’ franchise quarterback:
“Allen enters virtually every season as the consensus favorite for clutch quarterback. The Bills star has now posted a clutch grade above 70.0 in five of eight qualifying seasons, including four above 75.0, giving him one of the strongest long-term résumés in these situations among active quarterbacks.”
Allen’s clutch passing grade of 81.2 ranked fifth in the NFL last year behind players like Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, and Sam Darnold. But what makes Allen so dangerous is how good he is with his legs in clutch situations, as well.
There were several times last season where he sealed games with his legs and that’s just something that players like Prescott, Stafford, and Darnold aren’t able to do at this stage in his career.
Allen has rushed for 41 touchdowns over the last three seasons and the only quarterback who is close to that total is Jalen Hurts (37), thanks to the patented “tush push”. But touchdowns don’t even tell the whole story when it comes to Allen’s rushing ability.
Going into the 2026 season, Allen holds the all-time record for rushing success rate (60.0%), according to Pro Football Reference. A successful play is defined as follows, according to the site:
“A play that gains at least 40% of yards required on 1st down, 60% of yards required on 2nd down, and 100% on 3rd or 4th down.”
Because Allen is so unstoppable on short yardage runs, as well as on early-down scrambles, it makes him nearly impossible to defend in clutch situations. He’s one of the league’s most accurate passers and one of the most dangerous rushing quarterbacks of all time. That doesn’t mean he’s always clutch, but with 25 career game-winning drives, it’s pretty rare when he doesn’t deliver.
The Bills are hopeful that they won’t need Allen to come through as often in the clutch this season as they believe they’ve put more talent around him. Time will tell if that’s the case but having a quarterback who thrives in high-pressure situations is quite a luxury to have. Now, it’s time for the Bills to take advantage of their historically great clutch QB.
