There will be some live football happening today at Highmark Stadium, as the Buffalo Bills will be hosting the Carolina Panthers in their preseason opener today at 1PM. Even though it's just preseason, it's still a live game between two teams that have players that are looking to prove their worth. Every player that is on the Bills will be getting evaluated today, whether it's a lot or a little.
Bills fans obviously know the players who are guaranteed to be a lock for a roster spot. We all know that guys like Josh Allen, James Cook, DJ Moore, Bradley Chubb, Deone Walker, and Christian Benford are going to be on the active roster come Week 1 of the regular season.
Preseason is all about the backups and how they are evaluated, and the coaching staff for the Bills will have their hands full with a bunch of evaluations. Some will be easier than others, and some could raise even more concerns than what there currently are.
Coaching staff has tough evaluation task throughout preseason
The preseason is not long at all, and it can be tough to truly evaluate players in that short span. That’s just assuming that health across the roster stays as best as it can. In addition, the coaching staff may also be in a spot where they need to bring in more competition if someone on the current roster is giving them more to worry about.
One spot that is still a major concern for the Bills is not the quarterback position, but the depth at it. With having Josh Allen as the starter, there are no worries about the quarterback position. However, the same can't be said about the backup for him.
The current backups to Josh Allen are Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele. Bills fans know that Buechele is only a practice squad player and has been throughout his tenure with the Bills. As for Kyle Allen, this is his second stint with the Bills, and there was some frustration when the Bills brought him back on a two-year deal in free agency back in March.
Kyle Allen hasn't had the best overall career as a journeyman, with only one year of starting in multiple games and he threw almost as many interceptions as he did touchdowns back in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers. Since then, he's been a consistent backup and he hasn't had the best summer with the Bills either.

He will need to show some kind of promise that he could step in for Josh Allen, should anything happen. If Kyle Allen continues his struggles from training camp into the preseason, the coaching staff will need to seriously consider bringing in more competition before the regular season.
The Bills have had a revolving door for backup quarterbacks since Josh Allen came to Buffalo, and it’s time to finally have some stability there. It’s an important position that doesn’t get talked about until there is no other choice once the starter goes down.
