We are less than 24 hours away from the Buffalo Bills taking the field for their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. It will be the first time where the Bills will get the chance to show who they are, what they are about with all of their changes, and overall get to hit other players that aren’t their teammates.

Preseason is a chance for players that aren’t guaranteed locks to make the final 53-man roster to show that they deserve a spot. Then there are some cases where they could even be fighting for a starting spot, but that is pretty rare.

One position that the Bills don’t have to worry about is quarterback, with them having the best one in the league with Josh Allen. However, the depth behind him is extremely concerning with Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele.

Bills' backup QB position continues to be biggest roster problem

During Thursday’s practice, ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg who covers the Bills reported that Buechele (who is QB3 right now), threw “back-to-back” interceptions, with one of them being returned for a touchdown.

"Quarterback Shane Buechele threw interceptions on back-to-back plays during 11-on-11 drills. The first was a pick-six by defensive back Te'Cory Couch and the second was on an errant throw taken away by linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo." said Getzenberg.

During training camp, Kyle Allen has not performed the greatest at all as the penciled-in backup to Josh Allen. Then you have Buechele throwing back-to-back interceptions to players who may not even be on the final roster is not a promising sign for the Bills’ quarterback room behind Josh Allen.

Bills not solidifying true QB2 behind Josh Allen is massive risk

I get it, Josh Allen hasn’t missed a start since his rookie season. It’s the only season of his career where he didn’t play in every single game. Even though he has been injured at times, he has yet to miss a start since 2018. However, having a solid backup option should something ever happen to where he can’t play would be in Buffalo’s best interest.

During the 2024 NFL Draft, University of Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton would have been a perfect quarterback for the Bills to draft as a backup to Josh Allen would have been a great option. Instead, he was drafted to the New England Patriots and then he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

With Josh Allen under center, the Bills have had a revolving door of backups for him. There have been guys like Matt Barkley, Mitch Trubisky, Kyle Allen, and Case Keenum. Kyle Allen and Trubisky even had second stints with the team.

The backup quarterback is a position that doesn’t get enough attention, until the starter goes down. Even though Josh Allen has been durable throughout his career, the Bills should be heavily investing in bringing in another quarterback that can provide some kind of stability that Kyle Allen and Buechele unfortunately can’t.
