While Josh Allen will more than likely get the official start for the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, the main priority for Buffalo is to get him off the field quickly and get Mitch Trubisky under center for the remainder of the game. While Buffalo can potentially get higher than the 7-seed with a win, they are a Wild Card team going into the playoffs no matter what.
This is Trubisky’s third season backing up Josh Allen, first coming to Buffalo in 2021, and the coming back to the Bills in 2024. While he has finished out some games for Allen due to the Bills being up by a lot, he has only played in one true game for Buffalo which was Week 18 last season against the Patriots.
Allen played one down to keep his starting streak alive, and then Trubisky came into the game for Buffalo. Trubisky went 15/21 for 101 passing yards and one touchdown. He also added 12 yards on the ground. If the same story repeats this Sunday from last season’s Week 18, Bills fans should see a lot of Trubisky in what could be Buffalo’s final game in the old Highmark Stadium.
Week 18 could be huge test for Mitch Trubisky's future with Bills
Obviously, Josh Allen is the franchise in Buffalo. No one is denying that. However, for as great as Allen is, the Bills still need to make sure that they have a quality backup who can come in should Allen not be ready to go. Trubisky had some early success in his career with the Bears, but he didn’t have the “it factor” which is why the Bears opted to let him walk in 2021.
While Trubisky is a great teammate, the Bills have to evaluate him to see if they should extend him or let him walk in free agency again. Trusbisky signed a two-year deal with the Bills in 2024, making him a pending free agent this offseason.
Fans shouldn’t expect Trubisky to play like an MVP against the Jets, but he has to show that he is still the best backup option to Allen in Buffalo. If he can’t get things going against this Jets defense, then Buffalo should be looking somewhere else to bring in a better backup to Allen.
