The Buffalo Bills got great news on Friday from their injury report. Running back Ty Johnson is set to make his debut after dealing with a hamstring from the Bills’ “Return of the Red and Blue” practice back in August. The Bills have been rolling with James Cook, Ray Davis, and Frank Gore Jr. as the three main backs their last two games.
With Johnson set to make his debut, the Bills are now at full strength at that position. Johnson is one of those running backs that is overlooked by non-Bills fans, but shouldn't be.
Versatility is Ty Johnson's biggest strength for Joe Brady's offense
Since joining the Bills in 2023, Johnson has shown to have the best of both skillsets in terms of running the ball and providing help in the passing attack. In addition, he provides great protection in the backfield for Josh Allen.
Up until this season, Johnson had not missed a game for the Bills the last two seasons which shows how durable he has been up until this past summer.
Johnson typically comes out onto the field in third-down situations whether the offense is one yard or ten yards away from the first down. In those short yardage situations, Johnson has the physiciality to push the ball to move the chains. He's got 53 total first downs both on the ground and through the air the last two seasons. There is so much that he can do that lines up perfectly with Brady's offense.
Ty Johnson provides more offensive help for Bills ahead of Week 3
With the injuries that the Bills have at wide reciever with Keon Coleman and DJ Moore (both who are listed as questionable for tomorrow), if one or neither of them are ready to go, Johnson could find himself in more passing situations out in the flat.
The Chargers defense is allowing 262.5 passing yards per games, while also giving up 86.5 rushing yards per game. Now granted, due to their offense not living up to their expectations, it puts more stress on the defense. However, there is room for Johnson to make his impact along with Cook.
Having Johnson back on the field takes pressure off of the offense and with this game potentially being a trap for the Bills, because of how bad the Chargers have been, Buffalo is going to need everything they have to avoid a potential upset in front of the home crowd.
