Each season, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott gets a lot of praise and a lot of critique. In the regular season, McDermott gets praise for how dominant the Bills are where they are scoring 30+ points. However, the postseason has not been too kind to him. Under his lead, the Bills have a losing record and have been knocked out of the playoffs in the divisional round the last three seasons.
Coming into this season, there were a lot of people counting the Bills out because of their offseason losses. Now they are getting ready to host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football in Orchard Park this weekend. Part of that reason is because of the leadership through adversity that McDermott has presented.
To think that there has been little to no talk of Sean McDermott winning the NFL Coach of the Year award is ridiculous. After having to listen to the chatter about being on a potential hot seat and then leading the Bills to their fifth consecutive AFC East title in Week 13, how is McDermott not being considered a top candidate? It’s unbelievable…however, it can no longer be ignored after McDermott just added an award to his resume this season.
Sean McDermott named the winner of 36th Greasy Neale award proves he belongs in the COY award conversation
The Maxwell Football Club has chosen McDermott as this year’s winner and outstanding coach in the NFL. This is just the only latest accomplishment that McDermott has earned this season, according to the Buffalo Bills PR X account.
In addition to earning this honor, McDermott became the 5th head coach in NFL history with five straight 11+ win seasons. Only Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, Tony Dungy and Tom Landry have earned that honor as well. He led the Bills to two wins against two 15+ win teams (Chiefs & Lions), and helped the Bills become the first team since 2009 and one of eight teams all-time to clinch a division title with five games remaining in the regular season.
I understand that coaches like Dan Quinn, Jim Harbaugh and Kevin O’Connell should be in the conversation considering what their teams were expected to do (which was not much). However, for all of the criticism that Sean McDermott and the Bills faced last offseason, there’s no way that McDermott can be overlooked for this award. He’s already been screwed out of it in past seasons so this year is his year that he truly deserves it.
