When the Buffalo Bills made the move to fire Sean McDermott just two days after Buffalo’s playoff loss against the Denver Broncos, it sent major shock waves across Bills Mafia. There were a ton of fans who thought that it should have been just Brandon Beane, or atleast both Beane and McDermott that were shown the door. Instead, Beane stayed and got a promotion as the President of Football Operations.
In less than ten days after McDermott was fired, the Bills officially completed their head coaching search and decided to promote Joe Brady from offensive coordinator to head coach and replace McDermott.
This news definitely had people reacting both positively and negatively, but Brady has the continuity with Josh Allen, and has been in the building since 2022. It makes sense and quite frankly, it was time for a change at the spot and Brady will now get his chance.
Brady brought in a new coaching staff and now he will participate in his first draft as a head coach. While the Bills have moved forward, McDermott will be taking the year off and there is a great chance that he will be one of the top head coaching candidates in next year’s cycle. He’s had too much success in Buffalo to not get some serious consideration.
While McDermott may not be on the sideline this coming season, he is making some media appearances with the most recent on NFL Network with Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. Going into tonight’s draft, McDermott talked about a variety of topics, including how he feels Joe Brady could do in his first year as the new head coach for the Bills.
Sean McDermott believes Joe Brady will do a great job as Bills head coach
Rapoport had asked McDermott “What kind of a head coach is Joe Brady going to be?”
“It’s a different job. We can prepare all we want, but it’s a different job than any other job that leads to that job. Joe is a very talented coach, he’s a very talented playcaller, and what I saw in Joe in four seasons, he’s going to do a good job, and I’m looking forward to watching him. I think he knows that I’m always here if he needs anything.” said McDermott.

McDermott and Brady have worked together since 2022 when Brady was hired as the quarterbacks coach after being fired as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. After McDermott fired Ken Dorsey in the middle of the 2023 season, it was Brady who took over playcalling duties and was then eventually named the permanent offensive coordinator.
Now, Brady will be the successor to McDermott and will look to do what McDermott was never able to accomplish in Buffalo; reach and win the Super Bowl. Brady does have some big shoes to fill and Bills fans are wondering if he can do more than what McDermott did. Only time will tell.
