There’s no denying the fact that the Buffalo Bills losing in overtime to the Denver Broncos is going to sting for awhile. After taking down the Jaguars in Jacksonville, the Bills were looking to pull off an upset against the Broncos in Denver, but they fell by 3 points in overtime in such a heartbreaking fashion that left fans devastated.

The Bills came back being down 23-10 and yet the Broncos only needed 10 more points to punch their ticket to the AFC Championship game and send Buffalo home for the offseason.

There is no doubt that Josh Allen deserves a massive amount of blame for this loss, but the main factor about this game that should be obvious is that Sean McDermott may have officially reached his ceiling as the head coach of the Bills.

Bills' heartbreaking loss may put Sean McDermott's future in Buffalo up in air

I would be absolutely shocked if the Bills decided to make a move at head coach, but there has to be atleast a conversation about whether or not the Bills can get over the hump with McDermott. Since 2020, McDermott has had so many chances to prove that he can win the big one with a generational quarterback in Josh Allen and yet his defense has been the main problem every single season.

Even with Allen turning the ball over four times, the defense still gave up 33 points to the Broncos whose offense is not dynamic at all. All season long, we’ve been screaming how bad this defense has been especially against the run. Yet, it was never fixed and that is on McDermott at the end of the day.

McDermott is a proven head coach and he is statistically one of, if not the best in franchise history. However, Bills fans are now being forced into an offseason without seeing atleast a Super Bowl appearance despite Josh Allen being under center.

There is only so many chances that someone can get, and McDermott has had plenty of chances to turn things around and get over the hump. Even without having to face Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow in the playoffs, McDermott still couldn’t get over the hump in the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see if anything does come up with McDermott in the coming days and weeks, but with the head coaching cycle already in play and teams going through their first round interviews, there is a good chance that the Bills will run it back with McDermott.
