Since coming to the Buffalo Bills in 2017, Sean McDermott has established himself as the best head coach the franchise has had since Marv Levy. However, the only thing that Levy still has on McDermott is that he’s been to multiple Super Bowls. McDermott still has to get one despite having a generational talent in Josh Allen.
While that’s a conversation that fans have been having for years, there’s no denying that McDermott has become a head coach that most teams would want to have. Even though he has his weaknesses just like any other coach, there are other franchises who would love to have a coach like McDermott. Someone who can come in and clean up a mess.
Coming into Week 13 against the Steelers, McDermott has posted a 93-49 record as the head coach of the Bills. He has the highest winning percentage as a head coach in Bills history and Buffalo has been in great hands with him. When it comes to the playoffs, that’s the one big knock that is on him. Hopefully that can change here very soon if Buffalo gets into the playoffs.
Sean McDermott reaches new milestone with Week 13 win vs. Steelers
According to the Bills’ PR team, with Buffalo’s win over Pittsburgh, McDermott has now tied John Madden and Mike McCarthy for the third-most wins by a head coach in their first nine seasons (94 wins). McDermott currently only travels Paul Brown (96 wins) and George Seifert (106 wins).
Now it’s completely fair to talk about how it only matters what happens in the playoffs. McDermott hasn’t had a ton of major success in the playoffs, but there is no denying that he is a solid NFL head coach and the Bills are lucky to have him compared to what other teams have with their head coaching situation.
McDermott came to Buffalo to clean up the mess that Rex Ryan created. He’s done great for nearly a decade, but we all know that what he does in the playoffs is now what matters the most. The Bills have won division titles under McDermott and have become a powerhouse. However, there has to be postseason success as well to really consider McDermott an elite coach.
