The Buffalo Bills will be excited to show off their new, revamped defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard when they take the field during the September 13th season opener against the Houston Texans.
Highlighting the Bills' move to bolster their youth in the secondary, they will be tested this year against some of the top receivers in the game today. To help prepare for what they'll face, they will be put to the test in practice by going up against D.J. Moore and the rest of the revamped receiver room.
Let's take a look at the six best wide receivers the Bills' defense will be asked to cover in 2026.
Top 6 wide receivers who could give Bills problems in 2026
6.) A.J. Brown- New England Patriots (Weeks 4 and 13)
Just when the Bills thought they wouldn't have to deal with playing against A.J. Brown anytime soon...
The Philadelphia Eagles traded Brown to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Brown will reunite with his former head coach, Mike Vrabel, and look to rekindle the magic they shared in Tennessee.
Last season with the Eagles, the talented wideout earned his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard campaign, finishing with 1,003 receiving yards, on 78 catches while being targeted 120 times. Look for him to do the same if he can stay healthy this season.
5.) Nico Collins- Houston Texans (Week 1)
Collins may not be the most flashy wide receiver. Still, he is a reliable, sure-handed receiver who generally focuses on just being in the right position to make sure-handed catches. Last season, he had 1,117 yards on 71 catches while being targeted 120 times in 15 games started.
This game could set the tone for the Bills to finally beat the Houston Texans on the road and to be able to get them out of the way in Week 1. It should be a good indicator of where the rest of the season will go.
4.) Davante Adams- Los Angeles Rams (Week 5)
Staying on that pivotal Rams game, Puka Nacua isn't the only player they have to try to contain. They can't forget about Davante Adams and his dominant play on the outside receiver spot.
After a couple of seasons in Green Bay where he couldn't catch anything, he quietly became one of the most sure-handed wideouts in the NFL and has been one of the best ever since.
Last season, he moved into more of a slot role but still managed 789 yards on 60 catches while being targeted 114 times in 14 games. This showed how Adams was a team player by willingly adapting to a role he had no problem with.
3.) Puka Nacua- Los Angeles Rams (Week 5)
Nacua plays the wide receiver position like a man on a mission when he creates all kinds of highlight reels, and he will look to do the same thing against Buffalo.
Last season, he caught a league-best 129 passes and was named a First-Team All-Pro as well as a Pro Bowler.
The Bills will be traveling to the Rams' house at Sofi Stadium in Week 5 for Monday Night Football, hoping that Nacua doesn't make that one highlight reel catch that could cost them the game late in the fourth quarter.
2.) Amon-Ra St. Brown- Detroit Lions (Week 2 Thursday Night Football)
St. Brown is no doubt going to be a Hall of Fame wideout someday because of his character and his ability to be a massive difference-maker. Last season, the former USC standout put up 1,401 yards on 117 receptions while being targeted 162 times in all 17 games played.
St. Brown is used to playing in loud atmospheres like Detroit's Ford Field, but will be tested on Thursday Night Football going into the first game at the new Highmark Stadium, where the crowd noise will be more weaponized than it ever was at the old stadium, emphasizing the challenge for the Bills' secondary to cover him especially when Jared Goff hits him in stride most of the time.
1). Justin Jefferson- Minnesota Vikings (Week 9)
Justin Jefferson is indisputably one of, if not the best, receivers in football right now, despite inconsistency at the quarterback position. Last season, he passed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the fifth straight year, piling up 1,048 yards on 84 catches while being targeted 141 times in all 17 games played.
The Bills' revamped secondary needs to stay focused when covering No. 18, highlighting their key role in the game and encouraging trust in their capability to stop key players. Playing more man coverage to start the game should help out with this.
