Proposed Bills WR trade would just be the Amari Cooper deal all over again

No thanks.

The Buffalo Bills will almost certainly be buyers at the trade deadline and wide receiver is definitely a need they'll be looking to address before then. After their first six games, the Bills' leading receiver is tight end Dalton Kincaid with 287 yards. Khalil Shakir is next in line with 268 and then Keon Coleman with 237.

Needless to say, the Bills could use some help in the pass-catching department. Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News penned up one trade for every team in the NFL to make before the deadline and he had the Bills adding a wide receiver, just not one that would excite fans very much. His trade idea for Buffalo involved the Bills trading for Titans receiver Calvin Ridley.

"Ridley is hurt for now (hamstring) but he's being lost in the Titans' youth movement passing game around No. 1 overall pick rookie QB Cam Ward. Ridley would make more sense attached to a QB in Josh Allen who can push the ball deep well to him and also make him a red zone priority, much like he was during his young heyday with the Falcons."

Bills trading for Calvin Ridley would underwhelm fan base

This would seem too similar to the trade the Bills made a year ago when they acquired Amari Cooper from the Browns. Cooper went on to put up lackluster numbers despite Josh Allen throwing to him and the Bills opted not to re-sign him when the season came to an end and his contract was up.

Ridley fits that same bill. The former first-round pick by the Falcons in 2018 spent four years in Atlanta before getting traded to the Jaguars for his fifth NFL season in 2023 (he was suspended in 2022 for violating the NFL's gambling policy). Ridley signed with the Titans in 2024 and had over 1,000 yards receiving but so far, it's been clear that he's getting fazed out in Tennessee.

Now, first overall pick Cam Ward is struggling and that's always going to make things harder on wide receivers but it's clear that the Titans don't see him as part of their future plans. A trade could make sense but is Ridley the right guy for the Bills to add? Do they want a 30-year-old wide receiver when they could trade for a younger option and then hopefully keep him around if he plays well? That's what Brandon Beane will have to decide.

Some of the other names Iyer listed under the Bills' blurb made more sense for Buffalo. Those included Saints receivers Chris Olave and Rasheed Shahid as well as Jakobi Meyers of the Raiders and Jerry Jeudy of the Browns. Making another wide receiver trade with the Browns would be pretty funny actually.

To sum up, Ridley might be on the trade block but as far as Buffalo potentially him, fans might not love that idea. Let's hope Beane goes in a different direction here.
