Training camp is in full swing for the Buffalo Bills. Highlights are already being produced and there is so much happening with position battles, to the injuries that are causing others to step up and step in. Chase Claypool being day-to-day with a toe injury has allowed Tyrell Shavers to shine. Mike Edwards injured hamstring could open the door for rookie Cole Bishop to start. Intriguing storylines are already being written and we will continue to see more development.

There is so much more we could dive into, examine, or even hypothesize about. But I want to take an aside and wonder about why haven’t the Buffalo Bills released alternate uniforms yet? This may be a silly thing to think about in the midst of training camp but with the plethora of teams having already released alternate looks for 2024 it’s hard not to be a bit jealous that the Bills haven’t yet.

I don’t think I’m being modest when I say the Bills Mafia is a passionate fanbase when it comes to what this team does on the field. The fans can and have made a huge difference in games but can you just imagine the Bills out of nowhere releasing alternate uniforms or even throwback uniforms? The internet might explode with excitement.

The NFL expanded it’s uniform policy to allow a third alternate color helmet, but for teams to use a third color helmet for the 2025 season they had to inform the league by May 1st, 2024. Whether or not the Bills did this is anyone’s guess. I couldn’t find anything that said they did. For our sake I hope so though. Just imagine seeing the Bills come out in red helmets again, or even some throwback uniforms, or even something new. It’s a license to print money for the team, and you know it would be sold out hours into its release in stores.

The bigger question then becomes, what alternate uniforms or helmet could the Bills go with? I have come up with three potential options for the Bills should they decide to use alternate threads.

90’s throwbacks

This is the most glaring obvious one, the “glory years”. Red helmet with the charging Buffalo, blue jersey, white pants. It’s exquisite. Brings back memories of Jim Kelly to Andre Reed. Thurman Thomas juking and jiving through defenses and Bruce Smith dominating the field. This is the uniform set that is first and foremost on the wish list for the team to reintroduce to the fans.

“Buffalo Nights” alternates

Red helmet, all black from the neck down, hear me out! Black is not a color this team has ever used but I think it’s time to introduce it for the new era of Bills football we are in. The Red helmet with the charging Buffalo still makes its triumphant return, but with a compliment of blackout jersey and pants combination. The numbers are blue with red and white outlines. The red, white and blue stripe down the side of the pants. Names on the back of the jersey’s in white. It would pop, and these bad boys would never see the light of day, only the bright lights of primetime.

For this throwback we go all the way back to 1964 and the AFL days of the team. using just the white helmet with a singular red stripe down the middle with the red standing buffalo. This would be the "classic look" the Bills could sport while using either the current uniform or even go with the unforms they used in 2019. These would really bring out the history of the Bills from humble beginnings in the upstart AFL and show the newer generation of fans where we started and just how far we have come.
