Mitch Trubisky must shine in Buffalo Bills' second preseason game vs. Steelers

Time to turn up the heat...

The backup quarterback position doesn’t get enough attention most of the time until the starter goes down. When teams lose their starter for a long period of time, or even the whole season, it becomes detrimental to any kind of success. If you don’t believe it, ask teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, and Los Angeles Chargers. All of those teams have lost their starting quarterbacks in the last year or two and they became irrelevant for the rest of the season.

The Buffalo Bills have one of the top three quarterbacks in the league in Josh Allen. Buffalo is a threat within the league as long as Allen is under center and playing at a high level. He hasn’t missed a game since 2018 and it is a little surprising, given how Allen has played up to this point in his career. Whether he runs into defenders, tries to hurdle them, or tries to do some fancy trick to make a highlight reel, Allen was a wild player at one point.

With the way the Bills’ offense has shaped out this offseason, there is not a lot of star power outside of Allen. While guys like James Cook and Dalton Kincaid are on their way to stardom, they aren’t quite there yet. That leaves Allen as the lone star of this offense. If the biggest nightmare scenario for the Bills came true and Allen went down with a major injury, the Bills would more than likely turn to Mitch Trubisky to lead the offense.

Trubisky was brought back to Buffalo after spending a brief time with the Pittsburgh Steelers (after spending the 2021 season with the Bills). He was signed to once again backup Allen and he will now get the chance to get another shot at some preseason action against his former team.

In Buffalo’s first preseason game, Trubisky took the field against the team that originally drafted him in the Chicago Bears, and it was not pretty at all. Trubisky went 10-18 for 82 yards (averaging just 4.6 yards) while being sacked twice. One of the biggest takeaways from Trubisky’s performance was overthrown passes, notably towards Keon Coleman in the endzone. There were atleast two different times that Trubisky could have put up a passing touchdown (once to Coleman and once to Quintin Morris) but they were bad throws.

Mitch Trubisky must step up big time against Pittsburgh Steelers

While Trubisky certainly didn’t have the worst outing against the Bears, he was far from the best. Trubisky needs to clean up any mess he made against Chicago and find a way to solidify himself as the best backup quarterback option for the Bills heading into the regular season.

Going up against the Steelers is a great test for Trubisky because Pittsburgh always has a tough and physical defense. While Trubisky doesn’t seem to be in any trouble of losing his roster spot, he certainly has a lot to show Bills fans to get them to believe in his abilities.
